Now that the earnest money check has been dropped off, the inspection period is over, and the appraisal has been sorted out, it’s safe to start packing and schedule movers. Hiring professional movers is ideal as they are well set up with supplies, trucks, and workers who can move your belongings out and in quickly and safely. Its best to get estimates and schedule movers now as they often get booked weeks in advance. Click here for a list of Service Providers. If you don’t hire movers, this is a great time to invite your friends over for pizza and drinks and have them help turn what could be an all-day affair into a couple of hours of work.
If you are moving out of a condo building check with the homeowner's association or property management company to see if you need to pay any move out fees, reserve an elevator, or if there are move in restrictions, etc. Be sure to tell your movers which floor your unit is on if you live in a condo building and whether your building has stairs versus an elevator so they block off enough time for your move.
Remember that you can’t move into your new place until closing is complete and you receive your new keys. We won’t know the exact time and location of closing until a few days before closing. Unfortunately, we can’t reserve a specific time for closing in advance but can usually request the morning or afternoon. If your schedule allows, we’ll request the morning. This will give you time to close and get your new house keys by noon, so you can start moving in by the afternoon. You will want to schedule a locksmith to come and change your locks before you move in all of your belongings as this is the time you are at the most risk for theft.
Start gathering boxes and packing supplies. You may be able to find free boxes at Craigs List or at various vendors such as liquor or grocery stores. Otherwise, our updated list of recommended sources can be found under Service Providers.
Wardrobe boxes are great for your hanging clothes. Keeping your clothes on hangers will save you a ton of time. If you are using movers, you can request that they use these.
Moving can be incredibly stressful on pets so consider having them stay with a friend or in a doggie daycare for a few days while you move and get settled into your new place.
